Currently, Telugu Desam Party’s morale is at the lowest point since its inception. The reason being the drubbing it received in the 2019 assembly elections. It won 23 of 175 and 2 of its MLAs have deserted the party and more on the way. It is not sure if TDP can retain its status as an opposition party.
In 2014 of the many reasons that contributed to TDP’s victory, Jagan’s disproportionate assets case is also one of them. Media gave a wide coverage and carried out a trial on their channels on what would be the fate of Jagan and how many years he would be spending in jail.
Of the 67 YSRCP MLA’s as many as 23 MLAs deserted the party. The main reasoning by TDP was YSRCP is not going to exist after its leader YS Jagan will be sent to jail. From 2014 to 2019 some sections of media in the weekly editorials predicted that BJP is seriously considering sending Jagan to jail. For five years nothing of that sort happened.
Come 2019, Jagan is the Chief Minister of the state. TDP is struggling to be a force to reckon with. Cadre is strongly believing that TDP can only recover if the CBI cancels the bails Jagan goes to jail. This Friday Jagan is attending the CBI court after he took over as the Chief Minister.
Let’s wait and see if it will be an eventful Friday for TDP or it is going to be disappointing once again.
